THE ASHFORD LAUNCH

Jonathan Marsden (learning champion), Joy Butcher (organisor), Nicky Wells (learning champion), Allen Wells (mayor of Ashford) & Sue Sawyer (partner)

On Friday 3rd September, learning champions, organisors, partners and others interested in the learning champions attended a launch at the South School on Jemmett Road.

The launch was an opportunity for people to get together to find out more about Ashford Community Learning Champions. A current learning champion gave an amusing talk about what he does, Joy Butcher who is one of the organisors showed an interesting presentation and the mayor of Ashford also gave a supportive talk.

Dave Rawling, Jane Davis & Joy Butcher then helped people sign up and gave them their first task which is to research and add 2 additional learning opportunities to the list they were given. 3 new learning champions were signed up and we look forward to working with them in the future.

Thank you to everyone who attended and helped us eat the delicious buffet.

The team of Ashford Community Learning Champions will play a crucial part in helping local people who have the "longest journey to make" access informal learning in its widest sense.  Through our project Community Learning Champions will engage with people with learning difficulties, BME groups and people experiencing mental ill health.

Community Learning Champions have the opportunity to gain valuable expereince and skills through our partnerships, and act as role models for others in the community or family who might not otherwise have considered taking up learning. In turn, Learning Champions will be able to provide a person centred approach to learning, helping people in their communityto get the ife they want and control the direction they want their live to go in.

Our Project will recruit Learning Champions from many backgrounds,

who have experienced the same barriers to learning as the group they are engaging, which could be:

Parents

Employee

Community groups

People with a learning disability

Students

BME groups

Our key aspiration is to have a campaign that is meaingful, appealing and insirational, which will enhance the community, improve the health and wellbeing, skills and education levels and self confidence of the local people.

A successful outcome would see this project as just the begining of a life long learning journey for people who experience barriers to learning.
